Perform Green’s Becki Clark is one of the founding members of UK5G’s new climate and environment working group.

The group, chaired by Professor Adam Beaumont, acts as a platform for the UK5G community to promote understanding of direct (supply side) and indirect (demand side) lifecycle impacts of implementing 5G.

“Lifecycle impacts are key to understanding the true direct and indirect environmental impacts of 5G,” says Becki. “Not only is the equipment using energy as it is operating, but there are embedded carbon emissions through the manufacture and transport of the components. As of yet, there hasn’t been a true Life cycle assessment of 5G to help inform DCMS and indeed the UK on the role of communications as we move toward net zero commitments.”

The group will encourage further research and development in this space, and help to inform DCMS, BEIS and Ofcom on the environmental implications of the roll-out and adoption of 5G in the UK.
